Came across these two things recently:

1) Pepsi and Mountain Dew get the “throwback” treatment.

2) “Retro” packaging on General Mills cereals.

I don’t claim to be a design guru or anything, but man, how AWESOME does that box of Kix look? I’m less enthralled with the Pepsi and Mountain Dew redesigns, but the Pepsi one looks ok I GUESS. Mountain Dew Throwback just looks bad retro 90s to me. Reminds me of:

So on one hand you get awesome General Mills packaging for the same old cereal, and on the other hand you get “kind of ok” Pepsi and Mountain Dew packaging for pop with real sugar in it. Nothing is perfect, except Smashmouth of course.

Zach and I live in the same house, which provides opportunities for great jokes, like the time I put a blue light bulb in the fixture in the foyer (it’s still there, and it’s so annoying).

Anyway, one time he came up with a pretty great joke. He put on Smash Mouth’s “Allstar” super loud in his room. Then he locked his door (we all have keyed locks on our doors because the people who used to live there stole from each other) and left.

I was so excited about the retro General Mills campaign when I first saw it last spring that I ordered the vintage Kix t-shirt (for only five bucks). It actually came quickly, and I now wear it regularly - most notably to a game of kickball last summer. har har.

do you think those dieline guys are in some sort of popularity war with another packaging design website that is just constantly seething over dieline’s claim to be “the leading packaging design website”? i’d like to think so.

i thought you were excited about the pepsi throwback because of the real sugar aspect. HYPOCRITE.
