Black Metal

I’ve had a casual fascination with Scandinavian Black Metal for a while. Even before I really started listening to heavy music, I would often find myself reading up on that genre/subculture because it is thoroughly insane.

It’s a weird feeling, liking this music, but being so put off by some of the bands’ genuinely disgusting antics and ideologies. The genre is also pretty open to ridicule, given that its members are obsessed with darkness and chaos and stuff, but they’re obviously taking part in some reasonably organized activities to promote their bands. Anyway, one of those bands is Gorgoroth.

The members of the band Gorgoroth recently(-ish) split into two camps and are currently feuding over rights to the band’s name. There’s a summary of the conflict courtesy of the band’s wikipedia page.

I think this is the best part of that article, in which Infernus (the only remaining original member) tries to discredit King, a rival, former band member.

“…while King had left the band the previous year ‘due to difficulties combining playing in a clear-cut Satanic metal band as Gorgoroth with the fact that he is full-time employed as a primary school teacher.’”

Come again?

Full-time primary school teacher?

Awesome.

“Oh, hey guys, I’ve got to skip the church burning tonight. Parent-teacher conferences!”

“That’s OK, King. I think I’m going to stay home and update our band myspace page anyway.”
